Before the match, Keane asked Ronaldo to “leave this one” after pointing out the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was two goals away from his record.

“I think you have enough records, Cristiano!” Keane joked on Instagram.

But after scoring against his 150th different team for club and country, there was no stopping Ronaldo netting his eighth international hat-trick and stealing the limelight.

The Portugese star is delighted that his team took a step forward in their quest for Euro qualification.

“I’m having a good time, but the team was doing very well too,” Ronaldo told reporters after the game.

“I am happy and enjoying this moment, not because I scored the goals, but because of the level we have been able to demonstrate in recent years.

“It is up to me to continue helping the national team.

“The hardest thing was winning in Serbia, and it was important to continue with a triumph here.

“We are closer, we have two games – one at home and one away – and I think if we win one of those matches it’s enough.”
