Algeria won the AFCON 2019 edition against Senegal in Egypt with a second minute deflected strike from Baghdad Bounedjah.
The Desert Foxes lifted the Cup for the second time since 1990. The match was anticipated to be a close encounter, which it was as Algeria managed to close out the rest of the game after that early strike.
Senegal had their star man at the defence, Kalidou Koulibaly suspended for the match. His presence wouldn’t have made much difference in the game if he was in the same situation as Salif Sane who helplessly deflected the ball over keeper and into the net.
A crucial moment occurred in the game when Senegal was awarded a penalty in the second half after the ball struck Adlene Guedioura’s right arm, only for the decision to be reverted as referee, Neant Alioum consulted VAR. Algeria took the defensive approach much more in the second half as they see out the game with a 0-1 scoreline.
Most of the spectators had their eyes on the star man of both sides, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez. They did not contribute much to the game as the former only showed glimpses of his pace and threat on the ball while the later had to sit back and do some defensive work with his teammates.
Senegal miss their chance of lifting the trophy for the first time after they could only manage some long range efforts on goal throughout the game without hitting the target. One goal was enough for Algeria to claim the trophy in a well deserved tournament.
